The 57th GST Council meeting on 8 October 2026 recommended simplified GST registration for small sellers on e-commerce platforms and an in-principle optional scheme for small consumer-facing businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore, according to the Press Information Bureau's release on the meeting.
These are Council recommendations, not yet notified rules. The changes are expected to take effect from 1 April 2027, once the formal notifications are issued by the government.
For businesses using a virtual office address for GST registration, the practical step this week is to ensure your principal place of business documentation is current and matches your registration records, so you can take advantage of simplified processes when they are notified.
The Council also recommended common standards for GST notices and proceedings, which should reduce ambiguity in how notices are issued and responded to across states.
What it means for your business
- If you sell on e-commerce platforms or run a consumer-facing business under ₹5 crore, watch for the notification of simplified registration — but do not change your registration yet, as the rules are not yet in force.
- Keep your address proof and registration documents current; simplified schemes typically still require clean documentation.
